Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu · 6,000 ft

A heritage bungalow nestled in lush tea plantations with no small talk

Creaky teak floors, roaming buffaloes, and a veranda made for slow mornings. An adults-only (18–55) hostel for people who'd rather wander than be waited on.

The Estate

A century of wild beauty

Built in the 1920s by a tea planter who preferred sunsets over spreadsheets. The bungalow sits on 4 acres of working tea estate, surrounded by shola forests and eucalyptus groves that have been here longer than the roads.

The Waterfalls

Your own private cascade

A 10-minute trail through the estate leads to a waterfall that doesn't appear on tourist maps. No crowds, no selfie sticks — just cold mountain water and the sound of it hitting ancient rocks.

The Stars

Zero light pollution, infinite sky

At 6,000 feet with no city glow for miles, the Milky Way isn't a metaphor here. The stargazing deck has blankets, a telescope, and absolutely no cell service — by design.

The Rooms

Bunks with character, not thread counts

Twelve bunks in rooms that still have their original teak window frames. The floorboards creak, the brass handles tarnish, and the views from every window are worth more than any minibar.

Where you'll be

Tucked into the folds of the Nilgiris, where the road runs out and the quiet begins

Close enough to Coonoor for a chai run, far enough that the loudest thing at night is the rustling tea leaves. Bring boots, leave the itinerary.

“I came for two nights and rebooked from the veranda. The waterfall, the strangers, the silence — it ruins ordinary hotels for you.”
